In June of 2013, The Chicago Public School system in Chicago, IL issued the largest school closure in Chicago history reaching 50 elementary and high schools all in poverty stricken African-American and Latino neighborhoods throughout the inner city.  These closures will lead to overcrowded classrooms and endanger those students forced to walk longer distances to their new schools putting them on the front row of killings, murders, war zones, seeing things kids should not see to go to school.  These children are victims of an educational emergency and the purpose of our newly created organization will provide long term disaster relief to them and their generations after them.  And we are going to start right in the heart of Chicago’s most poverty and crime stricken community, Englewood.

Based on crime reports from the City of Chicago data portal via The Chicago Tribune (Source: http://crime.chicagotribune.com/chicago/community/englewood), from Oct. 27 - Nov. 26, 2014, Englewood has ranked 4th in violent crimes, 13th in property crimes, and 6th and quality of life crimes out of 77 total neighborhoods in Chicago, IL.  Some can be a product of their environment, but before they are a product of their environment, they are a product of their childhood education.  We want to push quality education AS SOON AS POSSIBLE .

Here at Merit Academy, we understand that education is the science of teaching and learning and every student differs and must be challenged to work to his/her greatest capacity.  Each student will be regarded as a separate and important individual and will be made to feel that he/she is progressing. Students will be given the opportunity to grow at their own rate and in their own individual way. They will be guided firmly, but with kindness and impartiality. We will provide activities that develop skills which enable each student to achieve scholastically to his/her greatest potential and to provide an opportunity for each student to use his/her special talents.

Merit Academy is a tax-exempt 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization (Tax ID Number: 46-1438445). All donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
